STETHOSCOPE
MY CLINICAL ROTATION DIARY-7
Day three
12:40pm
I couldn’t finish up yesterday due to the workload I had (like I worked the whole day *rolls eyes*). My body is still trying to adjust to the schedule. So let’s go over yesterday…
I called a senior registrar, who I later got to know as Dr Oka. He sent me the phone number of Dr Desmond, a House Officer whom Dr Oka told me to call for instructions. When I called Dr Desmond he asked me to wait for him to come pick me up. The hospital is pretty big and finding one’s way around can be pretty confusing, especially on your second “official” day.
He did keep his word…after I called again to remind him. (Note: I know the system can be a bit unfriendly, so little acts of kindness “shift” me a bit, since I came prepared for the worst attitude). He took me to meet the other members of the team and I was introduced to the team.
The “welcome party” was pretty interesting to me (maybe because of my expectation compared to what saw…it wasn’t as unfriendly as I thought). I was first taken to meet the registrars who were “moving stuffs”*. I introduced myself after which they asked me a few questions and cracked a few jokes. That eased me up a bit. After sometime the other members of the team joined in.
This team I worked with included two senior registrars, two registrars (residents), one House Officer and three other medical students (all studying abroad) also on electives, all under a consultant which I later got to meet.
Ward round began at about 10:00am (this was a general ward round. The HOs had theirs earlier) and lasted till about 02:00pm. Oh my! My body knew I had begun clinical rotation. I was so hypoglycemic (ask Dr Google).
It was an interesting one though, and I had my first medical drill…Anatomy questions I had forgotten, oh my! That’s a clinical-year problem. I did take up the challenge to go back to my basics (anatomy, biochemistry…) though, and that’s what I did (still doing…keep doing).
*moving stuffs-exchanging ideas, answering questions, discussing what you’ve read or learnt, sharing information (medical) others may not know of, etc.
