Waleed Hassanein, an Egyptian born US Surgeon, has made organs live on after a person has already died. People die in vain whilst waiting for donor organs and even if the organs were donated, few of them can be used because of incompatibility as well as organ decomposition.
Previously, removed organs were placed on ice ‘cold storage’ and their metabolism switched off. This type of storage was good but was only able to preserve the organ for few hours; meanwhile, the organ needs to be transplanted within 4-6 hours after donation.
To solve this problem, Waleed Hassanein, has invented the ‘organ care system’ which is software controlled, has artificial blood system which supplies the organ with oxygen and hormones to keep it fresh and working as it was in the body; Lungs keep breathing and heart keeps beating. The ‘organ care system’ preserves the organs three times longer than cold storage. Thank you Dr. Waleed Hassanein.
